Middle-Class Medicaid
That’s what David Morris, with Texas A&M, called the Democrats new plan to expand SCHIP. Middle Class Medicaid. Well said, David. He explains in his opinion piece that this new Democrat lead plan far exceeds the original intent of SCHIP when it was first implemented in the late 90’s. SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Plan) was intended to bridge the gap for folks who didn’t earn enough to purchase their own insurance but made too much to be eligible. This has been a good program and served many children from working poor families. But it isn’t enough. (It never is). Now the Democrats want to expand SCHIP to serve higher income folks, including families of four earning as much as $62,000! And at a total price tag of $35 billion!
My kids are grown now, but it wasn’t too long ago that we were a family of four living on less than half of the $62,000 limit. My husband was self employed at the time, which meant we not only were burdened with the higher self employment tax rate for Social Security, but we also had to purchase our own health insurance. And we did. We didn’t need a government hand out.
And even worse, this new Democrat plan to create universal, Federally funded health care, an inch at a time when no one is really paying attention, doesn’t even require that applicants prove they are US Citizens.
And the Democrats are tying to push this through why foaming at the mouth that Bush doesn’t care about the children.
When will the insanity stop?
