Late last week the Rayburn for Congress campaign released its much heralded endorsement list. Bentley Rayburn himself has told activists that people would be surprise when they saw the list.
Upon inspection of the list, the analysis appears to be a rather short list of past and former elected officials. Only a couple of individuals on the list are currently office holders. The list includes one Democrat (Darin Anstine). The list also includes a Republican (Scott Hente) that supported Jay Fawcett, Doug Lamborn’s Democrat general election opponent in 2006. The list also includes Bentley’s in-laws (Dr. and Mrs. Milton Dewhirst)
The list also is notable by the number of folks that party insiders feel appeal to more moderate and socially liberal elements of the Republican party.
One has to ask, with the release of this endorsement list is Bentley Rayburn’s strategy one built upon winning the primary or the general election? If his strategy is built upon appealing to the Republican base in the primary, Rayburn’s campaign appears to be grossly out of touch with a district that is both fiscally and socially conservative. Could it be that the candidate and his team actually has more of the acumen to run a campaign in Grand Junction or Denver? Or could it be that the end goal of the Rayburn campaign is to skip the 5th Congressional Assembly and Republican primary and run as the alternative to the Republican Party candidate in November?
