Gentlemen start your petitions

The legal period with which major and minor party candidates for elective office can officially begin collecting signatures to place their name on the August primary ballot is Monday March 31st. Candidates for Federal office need to collect only 1,500 signatures. A good rule of thumb for collecting signatures is that you usually want to collect about twice as many required to be safe.

In the 5th Congressional District at least one candidate, Bentley Rayburn has indicated that he will petition onto the August primary ballot. Eyes are on Doug Lamborn to see if he seeks the August ballot via the petition route on Monday. Doug Lamborn has said that seeks nomination via the caucus/assembly process but that he is keeping his options open. Lamborn’s campaign staff has reportedly made as many as 3 to 4 phone calls each to delegates to the 5th Congressional assembly to gauge his support among delegates. If Lamborn has near 50% he will likely go the assembly route. If his support is lower, odds are he will take the safe route, pay the $5,000 to paid petitioners and face his two likely challengers in August.
